What is a Grange?
The Grange is a family, community organization with its roots in agriculture. Founded in 1867, the Grange was formed as a national organization with a local focus. Our members are given the opportunity to learn and grow to their full potential as citizens and leaders.
The family is the base of the organization with full membership beginning at age 14. Women have been equal members since the inception of the Grange. We have a Junior Grange program for children age 5 to 14, that has helped the youngest members of the family learn about community values and citizenship for more than 100 years. Our Grange Youth program develops the leadership skills of our young adults and young married couples.
The foundation of the organization is the Community Grange, which can be found in rural, suburban and urban communities. Faith, hope, charity, and fidelity are the basic lessons of the Community Grange.
The Grange has four levels, Community, County or District, State, and National to ensure that the membership’s voice is heard at the appropriate place. Our membership sets the direction and activities for their Community Grange in true grassroots fashion, and those decisions seep up to the national level. Nonpartisan legislative advocacy, educational programs, service projects, and social interaction and networking are just a few of the ways local Granges serve their communities and members.
Core values of the National Grange
Community Empowerment - We believe strong communities are the foundation of a healthy society. We work together to support local economies, connect neighbors, and create opportunities for everyone.
Family and Tradition - We celebrate family, honor traditions, and pass down values that enrich lives and connect generations.
Inclusive Advocacy - We are a nonpartisan voice for all Americans - urban and rural alike - advocating for policies that enhance the well being of all.
Civic Engagement - We encourage active participation in democracy through being well informed voters, advocating on local issues, volunteering, and working together to build a better future.
Stewardship of Agriculture - We honor our agricultural roots by promoting contemporary farming practices, supporting rural areas, and protecting our natural resources for future generations.
Life long learning - We foster curiosity and critical thinking through education, mentorship, and skill building, empowering individuals to grow personally and professionally. We believe in giving children and youth leadership opportunities and fostering their growth and natural curiosity.
Charity and Compassion - We serve others with empathy lead by example and support those in need to strengthen Community bonds.
Faith and Integrity - We are grounded in moral values, guided by purpose, and committed to doing what is right even when it's hard.
Respect and Equality - We treat all people with dignity and fairness championing equal opportunities regardless of background, identity, or belief.
Unity and Progress - We believe in moving forward together, respecting differences, finding common ground, and building a more resilient and hopeful tomorrow.
Who
we are
The Bachelor Valley Grange is a local chapter of the California State Grange found in the beautiful community of Upper Lake, CA. Originally founded out of the Bachelor Valley schoolhouse in 1938, we have been at our current hall since 1950. For many years, the Grange was a place for community gatherings, the meeting home for local organizations, a host of community events, a rental venue for events ranging from, birthday parties and baby showers to community meeting and memorials, and an advocate for the North Shore community. Unfortunately, like so many of us, the Bachelor Valley Grange took a short hiatus during the Covid 19 pandemic. However, in June of 2025 18 community members gathered to reorganize and launch a new chapter of the story.
Today, we are about 35 members strong, focused on building stronger relationships in the community partnering with other organizations hosting community events and supporting our neighbors
